Stainless Steel Hook

A PV stainless steel hook is a structural bracket designed to secure solar mounting systems to tiled or slated roofs. Its defining feature is the "hook" geometry: a vertical leg that penetrates the roof plane and a horizontal foot that slides under the tiles to anchor into the roof's structural framing.

Core Functional Principle: Under-Tile Anchorage

  • Structural Rafter Attachment: The primary function is to transfer the loads of the solar array (gravity, wind uplift, snow) directly into the roof's structural rafters or trusses. The hook is fastened to the side or top of the rafter with lag screws or bolts .

  • Tile Preservation: By sliding under the roof tiles, the hook allows the tiles to remain intact and undisturbed. The tiles sit flush over the hook's base, maintaining the roof's weatherproofing and aesthetic appearance without requiring tiles to be cut or removed around the attachment point .

  • Standoff Creation: The vertical rise of the hook creates the necessary gap between the roof surface and the solar panels, allowing for airflow, cable management, and debris clearance .

Geometric Configuration: The "Hook" Design

The stainless steel hook typically consists of three distinct sections:

  • The Rafter Foot (Horizontal or Vertical): The innermost section that attaches to the rafter. This can be:

    • L-shaped foot: A horizontal plate that sits on top of the rafter and is fastened from above.

    • Side-mount plate: A vertical plate that bolts to the side of the rafter.

  • The Vertical Standoff (The Rise): The perpendicular section that extends upward from the rafter foot, passing through the gap between tiles. This determines the final height of the mounting rail above the tiles.

  • The Rail Platform (The Top): The uppermost section, which features a slotted channel or pre-drilled holes for attaching the solar mounting rail (typically using a T-bolt or rail splice).

Material Composition

  • Stainless Steel: The vast majority of high-quality roof hooks are fabricated from 304 or 316 stainless steel.

    • Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel is essential for longevity, as the hook is exposed to weather, UV radiation, and potentially harsh coastal environments .

    • Strength: Provides the high tensile and shear strength required to resist wind uplift and snow loads .
