Non-penetrating metal clamp mounting systems are engineered for securing solar panels to various roof types without compromising the integrity of the roofing membrane. They are a cornerstone of modern commercial and industrial solar installations.
No Roof Penetrations: The defining characteristic is the complete absence of drillings or fasteners that pierce the roof surface. This eliminates the primary source of potential leaks and roof warranty violations.
Membrane Protection: By not penetrating the membrane, these systems are ideal for single-ply membranes (like TPO, PVC, EPDM) and built-up roofs, where a single puncture can lead to catastrophic leaks.
Ballast-Free (or Reduced Ballast) Engineering: Unlike pure ballast systems that rely heavily on heavy concrete blocks, clamp systems primarily use mechanical grip. This significantly reduces the dead load on the roof structure.
Compression and Friction: The system secures itself by clamping onto the roof's structural seams or raised ribs (common in standing seam metal roofs). High-strength bolts create a powerful compressive force, generating the friction necessary to resist wind uplift and lateral movement.
Load Transfer: The clamps create a rigid connection between the PV mounting rails and the roof structure. Wind uplift and snow loads are transferred directly from the panels, through the rails and clamps, and into the building's primary support structure (e.g., purlins).
Modular Design: These systems are composed of interchangeable components: clamps that attach to the roof, universal rails that span between clamps, and panel clamps (mid and end clamps) that secure the modules to the rails.
Adjustability: The clamps often feature a multi-directional adjustment range.
Vertical Adjustment: To accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of the roof panels.
Lateral Adjustment: To allow for precise alignment of the mounting rails, compensating for minor variances in roof seam spacing.
